Flying - Washington DC (11-21-2003)

Today Sol and I flew down to Dulles International from Pottstown. Due to lame post 9/11
security measures ALL of the Washington DC area airports class B airspace (including outer shelfs regardless
of altitude) was turned into an Air Defense Indentification Zone (ADIZ). To avoid F-16's intercepting us
I needed to file an ADIZ flight plan for Washington DC. These are different from regular flight plans because
they are only used to track your plane while inside Washington's airspace.
The winds aloft at 3000 feet
were 40knots, making the flight a little longer, and the plane fly a little sideways. Flight time was
about an hour and 45 minutes to Dulles International from Pottstown. The landing fee was $10.96 with a
ramp fee of $20... not too bad for an airport of that size. After that we went to downtown Washington
for lunch and the 1:30 meeting. After that we went to Reagan National airport to the departure end of
runway 1 to get some plane departure pictures. It wasn't as cool as seeing them come in for arrival, but
it was worth picture taking. At Dulles we started the plane, talked to clearence delivery, then ground and
they were nice enough to tell us to taxi to runway 1L which was about 5 miles away from my location. It wasn't
too bad because I've never had a tour of Dulles from the tarmac :) At runway 1R there was a Saab 340, and Airbus A320
waiting to take off, but the controller had us taxi around the Airbus to depart first. Going around the Airbus
I could feel my plane shaking from the Airbus's jet blast. After departing Dulles, and leaving the Washington ADIZ we
headed to York airport (THV) for dinner, then back to Pottstown to get night current.
